The long-awaited, nearly $200 million, 3-mile-long Tempe Streetcar system, intended to create a more-connected downtown, debuts May 20, and riders get a free ride during its opening year. .

More than 300 service-bound residents of Tempe honored since program began in 2015.

Festivities are 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays in May (May 13, 20 and 27) at Tempe Beach Park, 80 W. Rio Salado Pkwy., Downtown Tempe.

Recreo is a chic indoor-outdoor bar combined with upscale dining and a laid-back patio that welcomes anyone who wants to eat, drink and have fun.

Passes are available to Tempe and Guadalupe kids, ages 6-18, and are valid July 1 through next June 30.

No time estimate yet for completing work and reopening freeway, according to city.

Although the afternoons are toasty, the evenings remain spectacular, perfect for taking the family to an outdoor movie in Tempe or Chandler.
