Just days before students were due back in class, the Corona del Sol community received tragic news: Wade Young, who graduated from the school in May, died July 20 while hiking Humphreys Peak near Flagstaff.
A lightning strike that proved fatal for Young also injured the other two hikers who were with him, David Lyons and Jaxson Baxter.
A memorial service has been planned for Young at Arizona Community Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6.
Also, contributions to a Wade Young Memorial Fund can be made on the GoFundMe website at gofundme.com/2f9vwnyc to help offset funeral and other expenses.
The three young men were caught on the mountain during a monsoon storm that dealt numerous lightning strikes.
Young, 17, was an honors student, AP Scholar Award recipient, member of the boys volleyball team and Red Kettle and DECA clubs.
He also played rugby and planned to attend Arizona State University to study business.
In April, Young was recognized by Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell as a Tempe Top Teen.
Corona parents received email notification about Young’s death July 21. Principal Nathan Kleve told parents:
“It is with sadness I let you know about the death of our recent graduate, Wade Young. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and all who knew this young man.
“I’ve been in touch with Wade’s family to offer prayers and support from the Corona del Sol family. I also reached the families of the students who were with Wade and let them know we are here for them.”
Kleve’s email to parents also noted that while he was new to the Corona community, he was “well aware of the strength of the Aztec family. We will get through this together. We are #AztecStrong.”
