Swedish choral group plans area performance

Mountain View Lutheran Church will host a free concert of The Believers, a 35-voice choir from Sweden, at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 27.

The choir is made up of students from the Academy of Music and the Framnäs Folkhogskola, four-year schools of higher education in Pitea, about 100 miles south of the Arctic Circle in the northern Sweden province of Norrbotten.

The group is an ecumenical high-caliber choir, members of which are preparing to either be church musicians or public-school music teachers.

In addition to three previous U.S. tours, the group has presented concerts in Israel and throughout Scandinavia and northern Europe and has appeared on numerous TV productions in Europe.

The choir’s repertoire is eclectic, including traditional sacred choral music, gospel, spirituals, folk and the modern sounds of vocal jazz. Besides singing A Capella, the choir will sometimes be accompanied by saxophone, piano and flute.

Their June 2004 tour includes an appearance at the Crystal Cathedral’s worship service including the Hour Of Power, broadcast throughout the world, and appearances in cities throughout California and Nevada. Choir members will stay in more than 200 host homes.

The tour is sponsored by Fellowship Ministries (www.thefellowship.com), a worship and music resource organization based in Tempe.
