After losing 13 seniors to graduation and only returning seven players from last season’s team, it was assumed that this spring would most like be a rebuilding year for Corona’s baseball program. Wait--not so fast.
Corona DI state championship wrestling team is doing more than working hard in the offseason to be ready when the official school season starts later this fall: They were hard at work last Saturday washing cars to help raise money for their team.
Most local areas high school football players and their coaches will be able to start organized practices for the 2017 fall football season on July 31.
The Tempe All-City Association awards banquet for spring sports honored a wide range of deserving athletes at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel in Tempe, where all four local schools took home recognition for their excellence in baseball, softball, tennis, sand volleyball, boys volleyball and track.
Corona’s boys volleyball program has the chance for a winning season with nine returning players, many who played club volleyball in the off season, and several talented young new players who joined the team Geoffrey Horewitch’s second season as head coach.
The Aztecs started the year with a strong group of seniors and dominated their competition the second half of the season to culminate in their championship win at the Division I State Wrestling Tournament in Prescott Valley.
