Kids amass 1,500 miles under teacher’s guidance

Summit School of Ahwatukee’s before-school
running club is at no lack of inspired leadership, it
seems. The club is guided by Kathy Dean, a physical
education teacher who has received recognition for
her achievement in helping improve school wellness
by serving as a Fuel Up and Play 60 program adviser.
The program is sponsored by the National Dairy
Council and the National Football League, in
collaboration with the U.S. Department of
Agriculture.
In 2010-11, 90 students ran or walked more than
1,500 miles, 10 of them completing the equivalent of
a full marathon.
The kids put Summit among the top 35 schools in
the U.S. in the Let’s Move in School program, developed
by First Lady Michelle Obama.
