Kelly Brunner, at Kyrene de la Colina Elementary School, was recognized as administrator of the year. Kevin Anway, a staff member at Kyrene del Norte Elementary, was named educator of the year; and Geri Dempsey, from Akimel A-al Middle School, received support staff of the year recognition.

Brunner was selected for what nominators called her “compassion and professionalism.” She also was recognized for her open-door policy as principal, coupled with creative leadership and creative skills.

Anway was cited for what judges called “his ability to truly understand students and treat all with the dignity and respect they need to be successful.” He also was recognized as a “go to” person, both at his school and within the Kyrene district.

Dempsey made her mark with the myriad duties for which she is responsible at the school. And, the judges noted, “Whether she is working with students, parents or staff, she does it with a sense of humor and good will.”

The foundation’s Jim Steinkamp opened the program, followed by an introduction from Harvey Gibson, business development director for Tempe Schools Credit Union, which sponsors the annual peer-nominated awards.
