Aztecs primed for top spots in AIA Division 1 state meet

Corona’s Track and Field program qualified athletes in 42 events for the Division I state track meet that was due to be held May 11 and 14 at Mesa Community College. The preliminary races were scheduled May 11 and the finals May 14.

“New AIA state tournament rules consolidated all Arizona high schools’ track programs into four divisions,” said head coach Tim Kelly. “Corona will have to compete against 60 teams in the Division I meet this season.”

The boys team qualified three relay teams, eight athletes in the running events and three athletes in field events.

Michael Seall, Dillion Baker, Cody Jackson and Jared Hirschl will represent Corona in the Boys 4×800 relay event entering as the No. 10 seed. Seall and Jackson will also run the 4×400 relay with team mates Dominique Branscumb and Matt Hayhurst qualifying as the No. 8 seed with a time of 3:23.52.

The Boys 4X100 relay team competing in the state meet seeded No. 12 out of 24 teams will be Dominic Mercurio, Tevin Mayfield, George Wright and Stephan Hill.

Hirschl also qualified in the 1600 Meter Run, as the No. 19 seed and in the 3200 Meter Run, as the No. 12 seed. He will be competing against his teammate Daniel Wrapp in the same two events as the No. 23 and No. 8 seed respectively.

Jacob Whitney will be competing in the 3200 as the No. 15 seed. Seall and Jackson qualified as the No. 8 and No. 9 seed in the 800 Meter Run.

Nick Seifker qualified as the No. 11 seed and Mayfield as the No.18 seed in the Boys 110 Meter Hurdle race. Mayfield qualified in the 300 Meter Hurdles as the No. 11 seed while Patrick Buck as the No. 20 seed in the same event.

Mayfield, a Corona freshman, set a Freshman Showcase meet record at Desert Vista April 21. Mayfield also was part of the first place 4×400 relay team competing on this relay team with Nick Martinez, John Osgood and Nick Creasman that set a meet record at the same event.

The Aztecs qualified in only two boys field events this season. George Bafaloukus is seeded No 18 and Branscumb No. 30 out of 35 athletes who qualified in the High Jump competition. Mercurio is the No. 23 seed in the Long Jump.

The girls team qualified three relay teams, eight athletes in the running events and three in the field event for the Division I state meet.

The girls 4 x 800 Meter Relay team of Sarah Williams, Hallie Swenson, Leann Willittes and Dani Lemieux have the No. 5 seed and a great chance of taking home a medal in this race scheduled May 14 at Mesa Community College.

The 4 x 100 Meter relay team of Megan Benson, Taylor Johnson, Lakevia Stormer and Gabrielle Dotson are seeded No. 7 as are the 4 x 400 Meter relay team of Stormer, Willittes, Williams and Swenson.

Benson will run as the No. 5 seed in the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles Prelims and the No. 9 seed in the 300 Meter Hurdles Prelims May 11 in hopes of qualifying for the finals May 14. Teammate Jackie Vogt will be running in the 100 Meter Hurdles as the No. 18 seed.

Johnson will be competing as the No. 8 seed in the 100 Meter Dash Prelims and the No. 16 seed in the 200 Meter Dash Prelims along with team mate Stormer as the No. 23 seed. Stormer also planned to run as the No. 5 seed in the 400 Meter Dash Prelims May 11.

Corona has three girls running the long-distance races: Ellen Dunn as the No. 16 seed and Lemieux as the No. 20 seed in the 1600 Meter Run; Swenson as the No. 9 seed in the 800 Meter Run; and Lemieux as the No. 20 seed in the 3200 Meter Run.

Three Corona athletes will compete in the girls field events. The highest seed from both the boys and girls team is Dana McKenzie as the No. 3 seed in the Girls High Jump. Dotson is the No. 15 seed in the Long Jump and Lauren Lucky the No. 23 seed in the Girls Shot Put. 

Freshman Showcase

Corona’s freshman track and field athletes got a chance to compete in a Freshman Showcase meet hosted by Desert Vista April 21 where the boys team took second place and the girls team fourth.

Highlights, in addition to records set by Tevin Mayfield in the 300 Meter Hurdles and Nick Martinez, Mayfield, John Osgood and Nick Creasman in the 4×400 Meter Relay are first place finishes for George Wright in the 200 Meter Dash, for Ryan Everhardt, Michael Nguyen, Osgood and Wright in the 4 x 100 Meter Relay and for Creasman, Patrick Cullings, Blake Fischer and Andrew Trusswell in the 4 x 800 Meter Relay.

Second place finishes were Wright in the 100 Meter Dash, Creasman in the 800 Meter Run and Osgood in the 300 Meter Hurdles.

Highlights in the field events included a third place for Trevor Jackson in the Triple Jump, and fourth place finishes for Blake Jones in the High Jump and Everhardt in the Long Jump.

The girls team took fourth in the Freshman Showcase proving to be most competitive in the relay events.

The 4X100 Meter relay team of Justice Onwordi, Amina Swenson-Kamani, Grace Ashu and Connolly Bronwyn crossed the finish line first. The 4×400 Meter relay team of Erin Wochner, Swenson-Kemani, Vicky Sanford and Olivia Van Vleet were second and the 4×800 meter relay team of Cynthia Hernandez, Jordan Blitz, Abby Leaf and Abby Romero were third.

Ashu was third in the 400 Meter Dash and Swenson-Kamani fourth in the 300 Meter Hurdles while Leaf took fifth in the 1600 Meter Run.

The highest finish for the girls team was a fifth place for Michaela Yelland in the Girls Shot Put.

2011 Tempe City Meet—Junior Varsity Results

Corona’s girls varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams all took second place in the 2011 Tempe City Meet held April 15 at Desert Vista High School. The following includes highlights of the junior varsity team only.

The girls junior varsity team had several first place finishes including Kelsey Cartwright in the 100 Meter and 300 Meter Hurdles, Jordan Chapman in the 400 Meter Dash and the 4X400 Meter relay team of Cartwright, Mariah Austin, Chapman and Anna Lee.

Carrie Tate was second in the 800 Meter Run, Austin third in the 400 Meter Dash, and Lee fourth in both the 100 and 300 Meter Hurdles

Chapman had the best finish in the field events with a first in the Triple Jump. Zoya Oyzerovich was third in the Discus Throw while Geneva Heinkel and Coral Tribble tied for fourth in the Pole Vault. Another fourth place finish went to Laura Truswell in the Shot Put. Sammi Gurule was fifth in the Discus Throw.

The varsity boys team finished second at the 2011 Tempe City Meet, the junior varsity third and the freshman team second on April 15. The following contains the highlights of the junior varsity team only.

The boys junior varsity team had six first place finishes at the Tempe City Meet with three of them coming off of strong runs by the relay teams.

Stephen Hill was first in the 100 Meter Dash while Alex Smith was first in both the 200 Meter and 400 Meter Dashes. The 4×100 Meter relay team of Carter Colton, Hill, Dylan Huch and Leland Roach took first place as did the 4×400 relay team of Alex Frantz, Smith, Huch and Hill.

The final first place for a junior varsity relay team was the 4×800 team of Frantz, Grant Swenson, Jansen Colella and Matt Hurst.

Huch also placed fourth in the 100 Meter Dash, Hill fourth in the 200 Meter Dash and Frantz fourth in the 800 Meter Run while Hurst was fifth in the same 800 Meter Run.

The best finish for the boys junior varsity team in the field events was a third for Tyler Price and fourth for Roach in the Long Jump. Ziming Dong was fifth in the junior varsity Pole Vault. Pat Carlson was sixth in the Discus Throw and Price also took sixth in the Triple Jump.
