With summer officially over, it’s time to freshen wardrobes

With nighttime temperatures hinting at fall’s arrival, it’s time again to retire the flip-flops and swimsuits in exchange for the latest fall fashion trends.

Ladies – are you looking to get a hot, new Juicy Couture purse but remain hesitant about spending money on new items that will become “so last month” in about a week?

New, more affordable options for keeping up with the fall trends can be found at Tempe’s Ivy Boutique.

For south Tempe and west Chandler women, putting together a variety of fall wardrobes won’t take expensive trips to high-end Scottsdale clothing stores. Brand names like Prada, Coach, Louis Vitton and Banana Republic are available for about a third of retail cost at an eco-friendly store located at McClintock Fountains, on the northeast corner of McClintock Drive and Warner Road.

An upscale women’s resale clothing store, Ivy Boutique provides environmentally friendly fashion options by recycling high quality clothing and accessories that have been lovingly worn and then bestowed to the store to start life again with a new owner.

At the store, customers can sell items that have been sitting in their closet for too long, and shop around for new fashion designs.

“It’s time to focus on conservation in all parts of our lives, especially in the clothing we wear,” Co-owner Gemma Wilson said. “We purchase unwanted, upscale apparel.”

Wilson said Ivy Boutique, which opened last February, takes only carefully chosen items and specific upscale brands. Among racks of jeans, fall dresses, shoes and jewelry, shoppers sort through a variety of unique fashion hits.

“We are very particular with what we take in terms of the wear on the garments,” she said. “We like our items to have original tags – clothes that are classic—and recent.”

Co-owner and Wilson’s longtime friend Chris Rockwell said she previously worked in fashion and retail, and found that fashion cycles through trends that can be revisited, sometimes almost indefinitely.

Instead of buying new clothes each year and throwing out wardrobes that some might consider outdated, Ivy Boutique allows customers to sell back unwanted items and search through dozens of new items coming in each week.

“Fashion always goes through cycles, so people always have stuff in their closets from older trends that are coming back,” Rockwell said.

“We’re just letting it go through another cycle again, without having to produce new clothes.”

Ivy Boutique maintains an affluent atmosphere comparable to professional outlets, though prices are pleasantly below major brand-name stores.

“We are very particular about picking out unique, classic items that you don’t see around every day,” Wilson said. “We always try to keep our customers in mind – we have a lot of individuals come in requesting specific items.”

Accessories, including eye-popping boots and metallic purses, are also available, in addition to necklaces, animal-print jackets and intricate strap sandals.

“We don’t want to just put a bunch of black pants on the rack; we want to provide a variety of things,” Wilson said. “We try to be a little more unique.”

Other than operating on a consignment basis with customers, individuals selling clothes get paid on-the-spot for unwanted or unused items, Wilson said.

“They (customers) get instant gratification here,” she said. “They get paid on the spot for clothing. This is not consignment – you know instantly know what you’re getting.”
