The city of Tempe is reminding residents to be sure they’re counted in the 2010 U.S. Census in order to help provide an array of essential city services.
Residents who mail the survey back by Monday, April 19, can avoid having Census workers knock on their door to complete the counting effort.
The 10-question Census survey – the shortest ever – was mailed to all Tempe households during March.
The form is easy to fill out and is strictly confidential. Each household is asked to respond with how many people are living in the residence at that time. Citizenship is not a consideration and, by law, individual Census responses must remain confidential.
Tempe needs all residents to be counted because the federal government uses population figures provided by the Census to distribute funds for everything from schools and roads to public safety and human services.
Every person who responds means $1,250 for vital community programs in Tempe. Additionally, a substantial portion of Tempe’s General Fund revenue comes from state shared revenues, which are allocated based on Census population figures.
