Symphony honors CdS musician Yun-Ting Lee

Corona del Sol High School senior Yun-Ting Lee has been named winner of the Phoenix Symphony Guild Young Musicians Competition.

As a result of his performance of the first movement of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D Major, Lee will be performing as a soloist with The Phoenix Symphony at the Side by Side Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9 at Symphony Hall.

The concert also features the 99-member Youth Orchestra, performing The Pines of Rome as well as Mahler's Symphony No. 1, with The Phoenix Symphony.

Tickets, which are free, are available through city of Phoenix libraries.

Yun-Ting has been playing the violin for 12 years, and currently studies with Dr. Phyllis Skoldberg.

Earlier this year he also won the 2002-2003 Music Teacher's National Association competition in High School Strings for both Arizona State and Southwest region, and he will compete in the National MTNA competition in March at Salt Lake City.

Lee has won first place for three consecutive years in the Phoenix Symphony Guild concerto competition upper string division, and the 2001-2002 ASTA competition for the state of Arizona.

He was concertmaster of the 2001 Arizona All-State Orchestra and the 2002 West Regional Orchestra.

This will be his second year as concertmaster of the Phoenix Symphony Guild Youth Orchestra. He has performed in masterclasses given by Mark Rush, Elisabeth Kufferath, Shlomo Mintz, and Ruggiero Ricci, and has attended summer camps such as International Institute for Young Musicians, Interlochen Arts camp and Meadowmount School of Music, where he studied with Sally Thomas from the Juilliard School.

When he doesn’t have a bow in his hand, Yun-Ting enjoys playing ping-pong, basketball, and video games.
