What's happening in your Kyrene Corridor schools

Kyrene de las Brisas

Parent/Teacher Conferences were held November 6th and 7th.  Susan Gardner’s class has opened the Brisas Post Office. Students will be able to learn about proper letter writing formats as they write to their friends throughout the school.  Letters will be delivered twice a week to mailboxes located outside the classrooms.  There will be no school on Monday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day.

Kyrene de las Manitas

NASA spent staff development day at Manitas training teachers.  They followed that experience up with a day spent at the school conducting student assemblies and teaching hands-on lessons with third graders dealing with the topic of Space.  Thanks to Barbara Mallory who attended summer training at NASA and bringing them to our school this month!

Kyrene de la Mariposa

On Friday, October 25 Mariposa School had their best Harvest Festival yet!  Hundreds of parents, teachers and students enjoyed games, rides, delicious food and snacks, a DJ, raffles and friendship!  Thanks to Jay Iole, our parent chairperson of the event, for a tremendous family evening of fun!  Stay tuned, our Spring Sock Hop promises to be bigger and better too! From October 28 through November 8, Mariposa will be conducting parent conferences to share information and report cards. Please contact the school office with questions or to reschedule an appointment. Our Book Fair, held during parent conferences, was also a huge success! Thanks to the many volunteers and parents who helped out and to the many folks who purchased books to support our library.

Kyrene de la Mirada

The officers for the student council were elected for the 2002-03 school year.  They are:  President Jake Buntrock, Vice President Christopher Boeke, Treasurer Christine Conger, Secretary, Nicolette Newcomb. There are 28 students in student council from third through fifth grades. The student council meets twice a month and does service projects throughout the year.  Student Council sponsers are Linda Virden and Susan Edinger.

Fifth grade students in Dave Maloney’s, Carolyn Hand’s, Kathi Crosby’s, Debbie Ward’s, Nicole Martin’s and Sheri Moakler's classes finished a unit on weather. They studied clouds, humidity, weather instruments, daily forecasts, climate, and weather patterns.  At the end of the unit Royal Norman from News Channel 3 came out to talk to the students about his profession as a meteorologist. He also showed a video on the wild weather of Arizona and how it can change in a matter of hours.

Kyrene de los Niños

Amy McKnight’s fourth graders are working on a research project focusing on the regions of the United States.  Children chose a region to become an "expert" on. They will research each state in the region and use the information to complete several projects, including a political/product map and a tourism brochure. Laurie Fyfe's fourth grade students have been working on writing friendly letters to their pen pals in North Carolina. Students in this class also are all working diligently to "think" while they are reading using various comprehension strategies such as making connections to their lives by using stickies while they read and answering factual, inferential, and vocabulary questions during reading.

Kyrene del Norte

Kindergarten at Kyrene del Norte has been very busy learning about rhyming words, about patterns in the world around us, and about how we can help each other at school and at home.  We had a very special guest, Gaye Hughes, who came with her guitar and bag of "goodies" to teach us about sounds and songs and how much fun learning is when you sing it! We have been having fun playing "Monster Squeeze" and making estimations.  We're looking forward to celebrating story book characters and having a dress-up day and parade at school.  We are learning, learning, learning, and love our ASU interns!

Kyrene del Sureño

Kyrene del Sureño Elementary school will be holding its annual Kindergarten and First Grade Reading Night on Wednesday, Nov. 13 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.  Students are invited to come to Sureño with the family for special stories, poems and activities.  Students are encouraged to come in their PJ's.

The event brought together many schools from the Tempe Elementary, as well as the Kyrene School District, including Aprende.  The bands featured a patriotic theme.

Angela Herrera's and Amy Furman's Advanced Language Arts classes are going to see "Much Ado About Nothing" at the Herberger Theater on Friday, November 1.

In Spanish classes, students are learning about Dia de los Muertos, and making paper skeleton masks, puppets or bookmarks. Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican celebration honoring dead loved ones.  It is celebrated Oct. 31 through November 1st every year.
