May 21 runoffs to decide city races

Tempe and Chandler voters went to the polls March 12, electing three candidates and forcing eight into May 21 runoffs.

Official results for the Tempe City Council Primary are:

Total ballots cast--13,614; Total registered voters--74,238; Turnout--18.34%; Total early ballots cast--10,391.

In Tempe, P. Ben Arredondo received 63 percent of the ballots cast and was elected outright. Vice Mayor Leonard W. Copple received 48 percent of the votes and is in the May 21 runoff for the two remaining City Council seats.

Running along with Copple for those seats are Pam Goronkin, who received 44 percent of the ballots cast; Carol McKnight, 28 percent; and Jay Mansperger, 27 percent.

Gene Ganssle received 24 percent, Brett L. Scott 21 percent and Ron Wilson 13 percent. Voters were able to vote for up to three candidates for the three open council seats.

In order to win outright, candidates needed 50 percent plus one of the ballots cast.

Ballot issues

In addition to the runoff candidates, a number of local measures will be on the general election ballot:

Proposition 200, the initiative question regarding smoke-free workplaces; Proposition 400, the permanent-adjustment-of-expenditure-base question; and five bond-election measures totaling $158 million.

As predicted, early voting accounted for the majority of the Primary Election ballots. Early voting results were:

Arredondo—6,698; Copple—4,933; Goronkin—4,707; McKnight—3,039; Mansperger—2,776; Ganssle—2,233; Scott—2,178; and Wilson—1,332.

Early voting for the May 21 general election begins April 18. The deadline to register to vote for the general is April 22.

The deadline to request early-mail ballots is May 10. Early voting at the Tempe Public Library, 3500 S. Rural Road, Main Floor Lobby, continues from April 22 through May 17.

Chandler results

Chandler voters elected Boyd Dunn to be their next mayor and re-elected Council Member Phillip Westbrooks.

Four Council candidates--Donna Wallace, Bob Caccamo, Tom Padilla and Diane Ortiz-Parsons--will run for the remaining two council seats in the May 21 runoff.

Results from the Chandler Primary Election are:

Mayor: Boyd Dunn, 5,147 votes, elected; Matt Orlando, 3,445 votes.

City Council:Phillip Westbrooks, 5,631 votes, elected; Donna Wallace, 4,170 votes, runoff; Robert Caccamo, 3,784 votes, runoff; Tom Padilla, 3,266 votes, runoff; and Diane Ortiz-Parsons, 2,835 votes, runoff.
Other candidates and their votes:

Chris Hutchings, 2,013; Leigh Rivers, 1,279; and M.R. Diaz, 771.

Other Chandler Primary Election results include:

Proposition 300 Local Alternative Expenditure Limitation (Home Rule)

Yes: 6,073; No: 2,038.

Question 1 General Plan

Yes: 6,184; No: 1,588.

As in Tempe, Chandler’s runoff election to decide the two remaining council seats will be held May 21. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Chandler residents who had previously requested an early ballot for the March 12 Primary Election will automatically be mailed an early ballot beginning April 18. Requests for an early ballot must be received by 5 p.m. May 10. 

Early voting will be available in the City Clerk’s office from April 18 to May 17. Residents who are not currently registered to vote or need to change their voter registration must do so on or before April 22.
