Sunset Library joins OneBookAZ project

What? Is everyone in Arizona reading the same book at the same time? The answer will come next month during OneBookAZ, a statewide effort designed to bring adults together through literature.

Similar to other projects held across the country, OneBookAZ will ask every adult in the state to read the same book and participate in discussions and programs centered on that books during April.

Several discussion groups will be held at Chandler Sunset Library, 4930 W. Ray Road.

According to Karen Drake, Chandler Public Library manager and project spokesperson, OneBookAZ is intended to generate excitement and increase library awareness. It also can help build a stronger sense of community, planners say.

The selected title for the inaugural program is Animal Dreams by Tucson author Barbara Kingsolver. With Arizona as its setting, Animal Dreams is a powerful story of love and courage that explores life's greatest commitments.

Individuals who read the book or participate in book-related programs can show their support of the project by wearing their keepsake OneBookAZ button with its 2002 Animal Dreams ribbon during April. The buttons are available only at participating libraries across the state.

The program will kick off in grand style April 6 at the Arizona Book Festival at Margaret T. Hance Deck Park in Phoenix. A discussion of Animal Dreams will take place from 11 a.m. to noon. Barbara Kingsolver is scheduled to speak between noon and 1 p.m.  on the main stage, followed by a book signing from 1 to 2 p.m. at a Friends of the Library booth.

A statewide Reading Relay will take place April 10, with excerpts from Animal Dreams giving participants a quick glimpse of the novel.

Locations will range from coffee shops and malls to libraries and city halls. Readings in Chandler will be at Dugan's Dairy, Chandler Fashion Mall, Intel and the downtown Chandler library.

Throughout April all three Chandler libraries will offer special discussions and programs centered on the book.
Chandler Sunset Library will host book discussion groups at 6:30 p.m. April 8, at 1:30 p.m. April 20 and at 6:30 p.m. April 22.

Registration will be at the reference desk.
At 6:30 p.m. April 17, Chandler Sunset Library will host a presentation by Susan E. Schwartz, Ph.D. entitled "Exploring your Dreams."

The discussion will focus on Animal Dreams and explore how psychology and literature reveal the meaning in dreams and how to interpret their many symbols.
