Kyrene’s Student Athletes of the Week: Matt Whitlatch & Katie Huch

November 19, 2005

Matt Whitlatch is an eighth grade student at Aprende Middle School and a member of the Jaguar’s undefeated boys’ cross country team.

He has competed in cross country for two years and has finished in first place at every meet this fall.  Matt excels not only in cross country and track, but also soccer. He has played soccer since turning four and currently plays for Mesa Classic Soccer Club.

Matt is a member of the Aprende student council and will compete with the Arizona Cheetahs Track Club this spring and summer.  When he is not playing soccer or running, Matt enjoys hanging out at the mall or going to movies with friends.

Katie Huch is an eighth grader at Aprende Middle School and a top competitor on the Jaguar’s girls’ cross country team.

This is her second year being a member of the cross country team, taking her seventh grade year off to play volleyball.  Her return to the team as an eighth grader has established Aprende as one of the top teams in the conference.

Katie not only excels in cross country but won second place in the 800 meters at the Arizona State Jr. High track meet last spring.  She competes for the Arizona Cheetahs Track Club, as well as, the Tempe Pros Soccer Club.

Katie is involved in student council at Aprende and the Wildlife Youth Group.  In her spare time she chats on line and hangs out at the mall.
