Library arts display promises to keep viewers ‘in stitches’

In Stitches, a group exhibition of contemporary fiber art in which each work has been stitched with a needle and thread and contains an element of humor, will be on display from March 15 through April 23 at the Tempe Public Library, 3500 S. Rural Road, Lower Level Gallery.

In Stitches reflects nuances of meaning encompassed in the word "stitch," and the ancillary phrase "in stitches." The stitching component of the individual works is at times used as an intentionally dominant aspect while

at other times performs only as a support or structural element. By deftly building upon cultural constructions of domesticity and craft each of the artists represented in this exhibit transcends and expands the boundaries of traditional fiber techniques.

The exhibition artists provide an array of visual messages using unorthodox materials and techniques, visual puns, cartoon imagery, odd juxtapositions and social satire to reflect the complex and multifaceted metaphor relating to the title of the exhibit. Artist Ray Beldner says that his work "...makes the art of appropriation both interesting and fun."

All of the artists in this exhibition are making important contributions to the dialogue on materials, concepts and aesthetics being carried on in the contemporary art world today. This exhibit elicits chuckles and smiles, with multiple layers of meaning waiting to be explored.

The exhibition was curated by Linda Lewis and is a part of the Arizona Commission on the Arts Traveling Exhibition Program.
