Recall talk fueled by stance on school, gun issues

John Huppenthal’s publicly stated opposition to funding for all-day kindergarten, coupled with a now shelved bill that would have allowed customers to carry guns in local taverns, apparently have angered enough of the state senator’s constituents to get a recall campaign into full swing.

A Recall Huppenthal committee says it has received numerous indications of support for the campaign, as well as offers of volunteer help.

Although documents submitted to the Secretary of State’s office last week are only preliminary, campaign backers say they are confident they can oust Huppenthal because of his support of vouchers for private, charter and parochial schools.

Campaign supporters say vouchers divert desperately needed funds from Kyrene schools and other financially strapped public districts.
