‘Horse Whisperer’ to visit Kyrene Corridor

Buck Brannaman is the horse trainer who served as technical advisor on the set of Robert Redford’s movie, The Horse Whisperer. His ability for starting young horses off right and reforming troubled horses has become legendary, in fact, the main character in the bestseller, The Horse Whisperer, was based largely on him.

The author of The Faraway Horses: The Adventures and Wisdom of One of America’s Most Renowned Horsemen, is a horse gentler—not a horse “breaker”—who has begun the training of more than 10,000 young horses in his clinics over the past 18 years.

Brannaman is often on the road, conducting horsemanship clinics in which he teaches horse owners how to understand and work with their animals thus creating a relationship based on trust and respect rather than force.

Brannaman knows firsthand how a frightened horse feels. Growing up with an abusive father, he often feared he would not live through the night. After finding safety in a foster home, he found his calling and salvation in working with horses.

In The Faraway Horses, he recounts his moving, inspiring and often humorous adventures along the way. He writes of the horses that taught him a different way to train, the owners he has taught and horse and rider relationships he has been able to change.

“These principles are really about life, about living your life so that you’re not at war with the horse, or with other people,” Brannaman writes. At heart, this rich, rewarding autobiography is ultimately a prescription for living a positive, harmonious existence—whether it involves a horse or not.

Brannaman is also a lifelong trick roper who traveled the world as a youngster performing at rodeos and special events. He and his wife, Mary, live with their three daughters on the family ranch in Sheridan, Wyoming.

Brannaman will visit Changing Hands Bookstore, 6428 S. McClintock, at 7 p.m. on March 15 to discuss and sign his new book, The Faraway Horses: The Adventures and Wisdom of One of America’s Most Renowned Horsemen. Information: (480) 730-0205.
