Parrish, Giuliano among arts award nominees

More than 100 individuals, businesses and arts organizations, including Corona del Sol instructor Linda Parrish, have been nominated for the 21st annual Governor's Arts Awards.

The awards, presented by the Arizona Commission on the Arts, Arizonans for Cultural Development and the Office of the Governor, honor organizations, corporations and individuals for their outstanding contributions to the arts. Awards are presented in five categories.

The Arts in Education Award is presented to an Arizona individual or organization for an outstanding contribution to arts in education. In addition to Parrish, nominees from Tempe are Desert Dance Theatre, Maricopa Colleges Television, Mario Mendia and String Sounds.

The Artist Award honors a living Arizona artist active in the field of literature, visual arts, performing arts, folk arts, architecture, design and film.

This year's nominees from Tempe, in addition to Parrish, are Bobb Cooper, James DeMars, Don Doyle, Gail Gardner, Kee-Juan Han, Helen Helwig, Ann Ludwig, Jewell Parker Rhodes and Walt Richardson II.

The Individual Award goes to a living Arizona individual who has made a significant contribution to the support of the arts in Arizona. Nominees from Tempe include Mayor Neil Giuliano, Salima Keegan, Margo Rivera-Wilson and John Spiak.

The Community Award celebrates an Arizona organization, such as a community or institution, for an outstanding project in the arts. Schools and school districts are not eligible.

The nominee from Tempe is KAET -TV/Channel 8.

Nominees will be judged based on the significance and/or magnitude of the contribution and achievement, the breadth of the populations served and the recognition brought by virtue of achievement and the length of time and/or intensity of activity dedicated to the arts.
