“Spring Song Fun Fest” in Tempe Features Two Choir Styles
For the first time, community choruses from Tempe and from Payson will perform together on March 9 (in Payson) and March 16 (in Tempe). The performances combine the pop sound of the 100-member Tempe Community Chorus—an SATB chorus—with the Payson Choral Society’s 65-member auditioned choir of community singers.
The public is invited to enjoy a “Spring Song Fun Fest” with a varied repertoire of favorite musical numbers including “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Loves Me Like a Rock,” “Shenandoah,” “Think of Me” (from The Phantom of the Opera), “You Raise Me Up” and much more, including a surprise medley of popular tunes that will have the audience tapping its toes.
The choirs perform several songs together, plus each chorus sings other arrangements on their own. In addition, the Mill Street Singers will perform a popular rendition of “Operator,” and the very popular musical group Harmony Rain will perform.
Cary Burns has been directing the Tempe Community Chorus since 1998. He writes and arranges music for several groups, judges music groups across the United States, and also is director and assistant director for other local music groups. Pianist Mary Sievert has been accompanying the chorus for several years and is also pianist for Dayspring United Methodist Church.
The Payson Choral Society has been performing in Payson, Arizona, since 1990 and is directed by Daria Mason, with accompaniment by Victoria Harris.
The concerts are at 2 p.m. on March 9 in the Payson High School Auditorium and at 2 p.m. on March 16 in the Marcos De Niza High School Auditorium, 6000 S. Lakeshore Dr., Tempe, AZ, 85282. Tickets, just $10 per performance, are available at http://www.tempecommunitychorus.org/performances and at the door.
