Free fishing festival for kids this Saturday

March 15, 2013 @ 8:00 am - March 16, 2013 @ 8:00 am

TEMPE, AZ – Children in kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to fall hook, line and sinker for the sport of fishing at the 22nd Annual Anglers United “Just for Kids” Fishing Festival from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 16 at Kiwanis Park, Mill Avenue and All-America Way. The free event is sponsored by Anglers United, City of Tempe and Arizona Game and Fish (AZG&F).

Fishing pros will be on-site all day to demonstrate and teach children basic fishing techniques. Participants will then have the opportunity to test their fishing skills in special tanks and in Kiwanis Lake.

Fishing licenses are not required during the festival. Free fishing equipment will be provided but participants are encouraged to bring their own, since loaned equipment will be limited.  Parents are strongly encouraged to assist their children while fishing. Children can take home their catches but must provide a cooler for transport,

Anglers United, Inc. is a non-profit organization focused on promoting the development of fishing habitats in Arizona and hosts the annual festival to draw children to the outdoors, not just to fishing.

“We want to provide children with the opportunity to learn how to fish – something they may not have done or wouldn’t get to do otherwise,” says Brian Pinney, Anglers United chairman. “Even if fishing doesn’t interest them, we want our children to experience the outdoors and learn to appreciate Arizona’s natural beauty.”

Registration is required and will be taken on-site before the event. Registration forms can be found ahead of time at www.anglersunited.org and at various City of Tempe facilities. All registered participants will receive free “Goodie” bag, lunch and raffle.

About Anglers United:
Since 1982, Anglers United, in partnerships with state and federal agencies, such as AZG&F and BLM, has been responsible for creating over $25 million in funding to benefit both cold and warm water fisheries in Arizona. These benefits have been primarily focused on children, the less fortunate and the physically challenged, as well as, fishing habitat.

The partnerships created for improving fishing and recreation at Canyon, Saguaro, Bartlett, Rose Canyon and Patagonia Lakes have served as the foundation for the major on-going Project at Lake Havasu Project.  More recently, the soon to be Biscuit Tank Lake at the AZG&F’s Ben Avery Facility and their Fishing in the Neighborhood Urban Lake Project, both aided by a $100,000 donation to AZG&F from Anglers United Inc.
