Cemetery project earns Eagle rank for area Scout

Last month Corona del Sol senior James “Scott” Lyons, a member of Tempe Boy Scout Troop 7, attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

The project by which the 17-year-old achieved this difficult honor was ambitious: he worked to improve the Twin Buttes Cemetery, a burial facility for indigent people near Broadway and Priest.

Incorporating the efforts of 37 volunteers and 628 work hours, the project involved spreading gravel for dust control and realigning grave markers, as well as mapping the facility and compiling a two-volume directory of the nearly 5,000 people buried there.

Hard as it may be to believe that Lyons could have time for anything else, his proud mother notes that he’s also a National Merit Scholar semi-finalist and is active in Corona del Sol’s marching band, National Honor Society, Acatecs and the Sesquipedalian Society.

In his copious free time,  Lyons also studies jujitsu.
