Area families part of planning group for Nov. 1 march to raise awareness of Down Syndrome

Warner Ranch residents Tim and Lori Marquette may wage a quiet campaign during most of the year, but they and at least five of their Kyrene Corridor neighbors will be loudly proclaiming their support at this year’s Buddy Walk.

The event, scheduled Nov. 1, is part of the local observance of Down Syndrome Awareness Month, a national effort designed to promote acceptance of people with the condition and raise funds for research, education and advocacy.

The local observance, starting at 9 a.m. at the northeast corner of the Student Recreation Complex intramural fields at Arizona State University, is expected to draw more than 2,000 participants.

It includes a one-mile walk, music, booths, a silent auction, activities and catered food from Chili’s.

Other area residents participating in the program include Tony and Janet Romo, who chair the silent auction; Rich VanSlyke, a member of the Buddy Walk committee; and John and Carla VanRiper, active members of the local chapter of the National Down Syndrome Society.
