New video system to improve traffic flow at Chandler-Price intersection

The intersection of Chandler Boulevard and Price Road is among five Chandler intersections scheduled to receive video equipment to improve traffic flow.

The new traffic signal management system, recently approved by the City Council, will allow Chandler’s developing traffic control center to adjust traffic signals and improve operations on the fly, city officials say.

The system consists of a video display wall, traffic signal control software and hardware for the city’s traffic control room in the public works building.

The system will allow the traffic control room for receiving traffic data while providing more functionality, say officials.

Employees at the traffic control room will be able to see other cities’ video intersections as well as Arizona Department of Transportation video on Valley freeways.

Variable message signs that can warn motorists of accident locations and future lane closures are also a part of the project. All signals in Chandler are expected to be switched to the new system by 2003.

The project is primarily federally funded through the federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality program and provides $377,200 of the necessary $451,374. The balance will be funded through the Traffic Engineering Capital Budget.
