3 honored as Corona's varsity Athletes of Year

The Varsity Letter Club at Corona del Sol High School has established an Athlete of the Year Award for senior male and female athletes.

The award, given since 1988, is based upon a point-generated system that rewards athletes for participation, academics and achievement in athletics, extracurricular activities and community service.

Student athletes for the 2001-2002 year are Breanna Pursley, Jeffery Webb and Ryan McBride.

Breanna has participated in volleyball, basketball and softball, lettering in volleyball and basketball.

She holds numerous school records in basketball and helped lead the team to back-to-back state basketball finals, winning in 2001 and finishing as state runner-up in 2002.

She assisted the volleyball team with in reaching the state championship game in 2001 and finishing state runner-up.

Breanna was first team all-state volleyball and basketball and led those teams top regional championships in her junior and senior years. She will be attending Texas Tech University on a volleyball scholarship in the fall.

Jeff Webb participated in football, soccer and track while attending Corona. He lettered three years in soccer and two in football.

He was the most valuable player and team captain in football and Joe Sellah (most inspirational) award recipient in soccer.

He was awarded all-city, region and East Valley honors. Jeff maintains above a 3.5 grade point average and is active in his church and community organizations. In the fall, he will be participating in a mission for his church.

Ryan McBride lettered in tennis for four years at Corona. During that time, he placed third in state competition twice and was the state champion in men’s tennis this year.

He was three-time most valuable player on his team and was a three-time all-state athlete. He was all-region and participated in the state tournament his freshman, sophomore and senior years, missing his junior year due to injury.

Ryan will be attending ASU in the fall and playing on the Sun Devil tennis team.
