Deadline nears for house to be completed or torn down
The clock is running out for Juan Carrillo to complete construction on his 4,500-square-foot home in Corona del Sol Estates.
The house, which has been under development for more than 10 years, still is not ready for occupancy and neighbors fear it won’t be any time soon.
Carrillo has until April to finish work on the house in the 1400 block of east Knox Road, based on a deadline imposed late last year by the Tempe City Council.
The city already is reported to be exploring its options, including demanding that Carrillo sell the house or face having it torn down by a wrecking crew.
Carrillo, meanwhile, insists that the work is almost completed and that he plans to hold an open house in March to show off his dream home.
About 40 neighborhood residents held a meeting with city officials last week to consider options if the house continues to remain uncompleted.
The meeting followed a city court brouhaha on Monday in which neither Carrillo nor his attorney appeared for a scheduled hearing on a building code violation for erecting a non-conforming carport on the property.
A warrant was issued for Carrillo’s arrest on the misdemeanor charge, but the warrant was dropped after his attorney filed a request for the matter to be continued.
