Sixteen bright and talented seniors from Corona del Sol High School and 7 seniors from McClintock High School were among those honored at a recent ceremony and reception. The students are competing for the prestigious 61st annual National Merit Scholarship awards.
These highly coveted awards are given to students who typically represent the top 0.5 percent of seniors nationwide.
Those selected to be semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship must meet rigorous requirements, including having an outstanding academic record throughout high school, demonstrated leadership abilities, participation in school and community activities and the recommendation of their school principal. They also have to write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirm their earlier performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Those who ultimately win the scholarships represent less than 1 percent of the initial pool of some 16,000 students.
The reception for the TUHSD students included parents, principals, TUHSD Governing Board members, Superintendent and Executive Team.
As in recent years, Tempe Union has more Semifinalists than any other district in Arizona. These teenagers have dreams of going everywhere from ASU’s Barrett Honors College to Yale and they have earned prestigious titles like National AP Scholar, National Honor Society member and State Champion.
McClintock High School’s National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists are: Bradley R. Bobbett;Hannah C. Brabson; Bansri K. Doshi; Alice G. Ku; Huanvy D. Phan; Amrita E. Rhoads; and Monica M. Welfert.
Corona del Sol High School’s National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists are: Caeli P. Ackles; Roger Chang; Jane J. Chen; Susanna R. D’Souza; Adam L. Huang; Jason M. Juang; Roshini Kalagara; Anuja A. Oke; Varun K. Pattalachinti; Joshua D. Reyes; Julia A. Schroder; Derek Z. Shi; Nathan C. Tam; Megan C. Whittard; Andrew J. Xi; and Andrew H. Zhou.
