Fire safety, CPR open house Oct. 10

West Chandler residents and their citywide neighbors are being invited to attend a free open house being held at Chandler’s Fire, Health & Medical Department from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 10, at the new Fire Station No. 1 at 1491 E. Pecos Road.

The event is part of the department’s efforts to educate residents and to share safety, fire prevention and emergency preparedness information.

In addition to tours of the station there will be fire truck, ambulance and apparatus displays, along with demonstrations of emergency medical services. Free blood pressure checks will be available, as well as drowning prevention information.

In a Fire Safety House display, children can get hands-on instruction on how to get out of a smoke-filled environment. Department mascots will entertain, and free balloons and fire helmets will be available for children.

Throughout the event, staff will be available to talk about the department’s Crisis Response volunteer, smoke alarm and Fire Cadet programs, and well as its Community Emergency Response Team.

The event will also feature instruction on Hands-Only CPR which, when performed by a bystander, has been shown to be as effective as “conventional” CPR in emergencies that occur at home, work or in public, according to authorities.
