Excelling in their high school classes evidently set a pair of young Tempe women on a path toward lifelong achievement. The James Madison Foundation has awarded one of its coveted fellowships to Corona del Sol teacher Lisa Adams, a 1972 graduate of McClintock High School, for her dedication to civic education. Adams is the only teacher from Arizona to be recognized with the honor, which includes a $24,000 graduate fellowship. Another Corona teacher, Jane Sparr Morgan, was selected by the National Council for Geographic Education as one of its 2015 Distinguished Teachers. Only 16 K-12 teachers nationwide earned this year’s award for excellence in teaching and leadership, and Morgan is only one from Arizona to be recognized. Morgan will be honored at a ceremony during the National Conference on Geography Education this summer in Washington, D.C., according to Jacqueline L. Waite, co-CEO of the National Council for Geographic Education. “We could not be more excited about her contributions to geography education and to her students’ learning,” said Waite. Morgan and Adams are alumni of the Tempe Union High School District and have more than 50 years of service combined as teachers in the district. Morgan has spent her entire teaching career at Corona. Adams was recently one of just 23 teachers selected nationwide to join retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s iCivics Teachers Council, a network of support for educators preparing the next generation of students to become knowledgeable and engaged citizens. “Both women have dedicated their professional careers to the students of our district and are both products of the TUHSD,” said Cheryl Jannuzzi, chair of Corona’s Social Studies Department. “I am lucky to be the department chair of such an outstanding Lisa Adams, top, and Jane Sparr Morgan, above. group of individuals.”
