opportunity that preceded the setup of a
police and fire informational booth at Tempe’s
Healing Field event. The city is working
through March to collect donations for a

A planned public safety memorial near the
main entrance of Tempe Beach Park will pay
tribute to those who have died protecting their
community.
The city of Tempe is collecting donations to fund
the design and construction of the memorial, which
will honor Tempe firefighters, police and canine
officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Those who wish to give may contribute at www.
tempe.gov/publicsafetymemorial.
Donations of any amount will be appreciated,
according to the project’s planners.
The memorial will serve as a tribute to the
city’s fallen heroes as well as provide a place where
families, friends and the community can honor them.
Said Tempe PD Sgt. Mike Pooley:
“The memorial is not only significant to me but
to my wife and our four children.
“It will always be something I am humbled
by, yet full of pride and emotion knowing that the
community came together to support this noble
profession I truly love.”
Vice Mayor Onnie Shekerjian saluted those to
whom the project is dedicated.
“Tempe’s police officers and firefighters play an
important role in our community each day, providing
safety education, reducing crime and responding to
emergencies,” she said.
“It’s appropriate that our community be able to
honor and remember them at a memorial.”
The Tempe Police Department has lost five
officers since 1919; Tempe Fire, Medical Rescue has
lost one firefighter, and two canine officers have died
while on duty.
Donations, which are tax deductible, go to
the Tempe Police Foundation, a non-profit 501-c.
Contributions exceeding $5,000 will have special
placement.
Information regarding larger donations is
available by calling Mike Branom at 480-350-8916.
