Overdue-book amnesty for giving food to needy

Feed the hungry and pay Tempe library fines without taking a dollar out of your wallet. Just open your pantry and bring what you can.
From now through Dec. 31, for every item of non-perishable food patrons bring to the Tempe Public Library, the city of Tempe will take a dollar off the tab for overdue materials.
People who don’t have fines will be entered into a drawing for prizes donated by Friends of the Tempe Library, such as author-signed books, gift cards to the Connections Café and more.
The food will benefit non-profit group Tempe Community Action Agency, which operates a volunteer community garden, a food pantry and other programs to serve Tempe’s neediest residents, the majority of which are families with young children.
