International judo meet draws ranked athlete from Corona

South Tempe resident and Corona High School Sophomore Seamus McDonald has qualified to represent the United States at the 2011 International Cadet Judo Championships in Harnes, France on Dec. 11 and 12.

He was also recognized by the Tempe Union High School District for his appointment to the team.

A good showing at this event can do much to advance Seamus’ standing and his ability to qualify for future U.S. teams that will compete in the Pan American Continental Championships, for which he will be eligible next year, according to his father, Charles McDonald.

Seamus is a ranked athlete within the USA Judo Elite Athlete Ranking System. The opportunity to compete and train in France, which is one of the strongest Judo countries in the world, will be invaluable with regard to realization of his goals, Charles said.
