Lady golfers score surprise ranking in state 5A-1 tourney

With only two returning golfers from last season, Corona’s girls golf team was not expected to be in the mix at the 5A-I state golf tournament. Instead, the Lady Aztecs hung on for a fifth-place finish behind perennial favorites Xavier Prep and Hamilton.

“I am really proud of the girls for the effort they put in, not only during the season but in the off-season,” said coach Pat Reed. “We only had two returning golfers back from last year, and most people had counted us out.”

Dana Finkelstein shot a 152 for the two-day tournament held at Aguila Golf Course in Laveen, coming in ninth out of 40 golfers who qualified for the state tournament.

Alex Haun shot a personal record score of 78 and finished in 19th place after shooting a 163 total at the two-day event.

Marlee Johnson, Mary Spiel and Victoria Haun were the other Corona golfers that represented the Lady Aztec team during the 2009 season.
